Changes to Australian domains – Direct .au now available

September 9, 2022BY Plastiras Lawyers

Australian businesses and website owners have until 20 September 2022 to seek priority allocation to direct .au domain names that match their existing Australian domain name.

If you have an Australian domain ending in .au, you can now register for a new type of domain known as .au direct.  This excludes the usual ‘.com’, ‘.net’ or ‘.org’ before the ‘.au’ suffix.

Existing Australian domain name holders can apply for priority allocation to register their .au direct domains until 20 September 2022.  After this time, all .au domains will be made available to the public for allocation.

We suggest you register your .au domain as a priority as once the .au direct domains become open to the public for purchase, an opportunity may arise for cybercriminals to impersonate your business or seek excessive compensation to transfer ownership of your direct .au domain.
